LAFONDA
Desire,
Determination & Drive – three words with three separate
definitions, yet one common accord. For those who are a
part of the “Now Generation” where to hustle is
paramount and to grind on a regular basis is status quo,
if you’re not pushing it to the limit, you don’t even
exist.
Entering your existence is the Bronx native, and
Underground Music Awards “2006 Best R&B Female Artist”
Lafonda. Those who are familiar with Lafonda’s work
ethic would call her the hardest working artist out
there, period. They couldn’t be more accurate in
describing the young business woman. There aren’t many
stages in NYC that Lafonda hasn’t graced. Clocking close
to 70 performances over the past fiscal year is diehard
proof of her BX hustle.
Lafonda (vocal range: second-soprano) has been singing
since the age of 2, in thanks to a loving mother who
shares the same passion. Lafonda has been performing in
front of large crowds since elementary school. In 1998,
she joined the Choir Academy of Harlem where she
sharpened her vocal skills and graduated in the summer
of 2002.
Whereever Lafonda goes, she brings along a presence that
takes over the room and a performance that is sure to
entertain. “I love entertaining the crowd,” says the BX
starlet. “There is no place, and I mean no place that
I’ll rather be than on stage entertaining a live
audience. If you call me and I don’t pick up, that’s
most likely because I’m in my element, on stage tearing
it down.”
Currently, you’ll find Lafonda promoting her new single,
“Ooh Ahh” produced by Playboy-Chi. In “Ooh Ahh”, Lafonda
sings about a guy who is the talk of the town with the
ladies, but she’s not paying him any mind even though
he’s interested in her. “You know the story,” she says
with a smirk. “Boy meets girl; boy wants the girl, but
the girl could care less. This song is basically saying
that just because every other girl in the hood wants
you, doesn’t mean that I must follow suit. OK, so you’re
diggin’ me. That’s fine and all, but are you even on my
level? I know that the ladies are feeling me on this
one.”
Lafonda has just come off of one of the biggest months
and quite possibly the biggest night of her young
career. At the 4th Annual UnderGround Music Awards, that
was held at the legendary B.B. Kings in Manhattan,
Lafonda walked away with the award for Best R&B Female
Artist; an award that eluded her the year before. “I
have to tell you that winning that award was a huge
moment for me,” Lafonda says as she reflects back to
walking onto the stage after hearing her name. “There’s
just so much more to do. I’m happy with my early
accomplishments, but I’m not content. Don’t expect to
see me slowing down. The skies the limit for me…”
